Others implored us to change our minds, repeating the refrain we had heard often over the previous nine days: “It’s not the time or the place.” Some assured us we would be “killed and raped” upon setting foot in the West Bank. I watched, despairingly, as participants who had known very little about Palestine nine days earlier embraced the rhetoric they had heard on the trip. My speech was angrily cut short by the tour guide and the next 30 minutes passed in a blur of insults and offense, now captured and replayed millions of times on the internet. I wanted to tell them that my own Jewishness, my own sense of a Jewish self that clings deeply to a tradition of social justice movements-from resistance movements in oppressed Eastern Europe to the civil rights movement of the last century and today-demanded I no longer participate in a trip that blatantly ignored and tacitly endorsed military apartheid. I wanted to thank the 35 other participants for their time and emotional energy. Regardless of the criticisms this concept has come under lately, tikkun olam was the first Jewish value I learned as a child and it has deeply informed my relationship with Judaism and social action ever since. I wanted to talk about tikkun olam, a Jewish value conspicuously missing from most of the trip. I had written a speech in the early morning hours. I had spent the last nine days getting to know these people and now I was announcing that I and four other young women were leaving the trip early to join with Breaking the Silence on a tour of occupied Hebron.

After a few minutes of back and forth, the tour guide handed me the microphone and I stood up to face a bus full of my peers, young American Jews from across the United States.

As we entered Tel Aviv and headed for the optimistically named Birthright Innovation Center, I glanced nervously at the woman seated to my left and then scooted to the edge of the seat. I sat at the front of the bus, experiencing the physical and emotional whirlwind of nine days on a Birthright trip through Israel. On June 29, Mayanot Bus 354 drove from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv. You really have to look for a good copy online and hope for the best, but for those old school gamer types this is a must have.Franz Kraus, Visit Palestine, 1936, Published by the Tourist Development Association of Palestine. Sadly as I stated before, you can’t pick this beauty up at your hobby shop new anymore. The thought of adventuring and questing for magical items and gold is fun, but what about increasing your innate special abilities and even getting some new ones? I think it changes the game to make for more interesting…if not evil character interactions and relationships. I always found the ability to hunt\farm bloodline potency from other carriers to be an interesting twist to the standard spoils of a typical Tabletop adventure. The character creation process is truly unique allowing you to do the basics from second edition, with the added capability of being able to use bloodline charts to have a small chance obtaining bloodline for your character to give them added benefits. I found this CS to be one of the best supplements to whatever you normally use. (The Gorgon: One of the biggest villains and strongest holders of the bloodline of Azari.) These beings have come to powerful positions within the game, and outline most of the rulers and villains that exist in the different states of the main continent. These brave mortals were the first to be gifted with the bloodline of the gods.įast forward to the present, bloodlines still exist, though as generations have gone by, the potency of them has faded with the exception of a few powerful beings who have collected the bloodlines through the games allowed means over the years. This led to the eventual death of the gods, but not before their blood was bestowed to the mortals who were present fighting beside them.

Without ruining too much of the story, years past there was a war between the god of evil (Azari) and all of the goodly gods that took place on the prime material plane of mortals. Birthright was a fantastic place to experience however, as it was one of the only CS’ to ever allow player characters to rule and govern an entire country through the economy, diplomacy and even war.īloodlines were also a very interesting addition to the lore and game play of Birthright. This CS is no longer in print since since the emergence of the D20 systems of 3rd Edition and beyond.
